Every year the flowerbeds at the A.K. Smiley Public Library are filled with colorful pansies by Saint Patrick's Day on March 17 to honor the birthday of the Smiley Brothers - Redlands' patron saints - with the brothers' favorite flower. It's easy to understand why these small, charming plants, filled with prolific colorful blooms and captivating faces, were the Smiley Brothers' favorites. Pansies have been delighting people for centuries and today pansies are considered among the world's favorite flowers.
Developed in England and Europe during the early to mid -1800s, pansies soon traveled to America. By the 1880s they were the most popular flower grown from seed in America. Now, pansies are a plant for all seasons, particularly in Southern California, where they can grow outdoors almost all year long.
