CAROL LINK: Spring is just around the corner, so get to work in your yards
On nice days, pull weeds, clip dead foliage, rake leaves, build compost, prepare garden plots, build raised beds, separate and replant perennials. Plant new shrubs, summer bulbs, and trees. Prune blueberry bushes, crape myrtles and blackberry vines. Apply a new layer of mulch to planting beds to discourage weeds from propagating. Turn compost to accelerate decomposition.
Several chores can be accomplished ahead of time — replace handles on gardening tools and sharpen dull blades and organize tools. Clean storage sheds and storage cabinets. Discard tools that are no longer serviceable and properly dispose of out-of-date chemical products or products no longer used.
Clean and sanitize aquatic gardens and repot aquatic plants. Clean and sanitize pumps and pump filters and replace pumps if necessary. Clean bird baths and bird houses and clean and refill bird feeders. Clean and sanitize plant containers and arrange a combination of plants in each container for lovely dish gardens.
