Sarries lock Smith eyes NFL switch
Saracens lock Hayden Smith is hoping for a switch to the NFL following workouts with the New York Jets and the New Orleans Saints.
The 26-year-old Australian-born USA international, who joined the Aviva Premiership champions during the 2008-09 season on an academy contract before swiftly progressing to first team duties, has seen opportunities limited by the presence of second row rivals Steve Borthwick and Mouritz Botha and as a result is pursuing his American Football dream with the backing of his club.
"To play in the NFL would undoubtedly be the pinnacle of my career," Smith told the National Football Post . "I will do whatever it takes to make my dream a reality."
At 6ft 7in and 18st 4lb, Smith is seen as a potential NFL starter by agent Jack Betcha who is convinced that he could make the transition. "Although Hayden most likely will be a candidate for the development roster in his first year, I sincerely believe he can contribute this season on special teams because of his athletic ability and polished tackling skills. With some good coaching, I believe he can be a starter calibre player during the 2013 season.
