High School Basketball: Cavaliers stroll past Broncs to district final
The road map to a Class A state girls basketball championship has but one path — just keep winning.
Against familiar foe Belle Fourche, No. 2-ranked St. Thomas More encountered few challenges in its first step of the postseason, besting the Lady Broncs 74-18 in a District 16A first-round game at More Gymnasium on Monday.
Having defeated Black Hills Conference rival Belle Fourche twice this season by an average margin of 45 points — including a 67-31 decision in the regular-season finale last Thursday — More turned to a familiar formula.
Forcing 10 first-quarter turnovers while allowing only an early 3-pointer by Bronc senior forward Tessiah Sprague, the Cavaliers employed a smothering zone press to set up their potent offense, getting eight points from freshman guard Alexys Swedlund and six from senior guard Caitlin Duffy en route to a 17-3 lead.
“It’s crunch time, knowing that everything was 0-0 again,” More head coach Brandon Kandolin said. “I think we were prepared — we were mentally and physically there — and that first quarter showed it. They know that if you are going to put yourself in a good position to win, you’ve got to come out strong.”
