Cottonwood Falls' Cooper Finishes the Iditarod
E-mail story Post a comment iPod friendly version*Update: Travis Cooper crossed the Iditarod finish line last night at 11:37 pm. He finished the race in 12 Days, 8 Hours & 37 Minutes.
In his first year of competition and as of Friday, Cottonwood Falls resident Travis Cooper was in 46th place and had reached the White Mountain checkpoint, 22 miles from the finish line in Nome, Alaska. He is competing in the Alaskan dog-sled Iditarod race. He was one of 16 racers remaining; 36 had already finished the 975 mile race and 13 have dropped out.
Cooper is a 2004 Chase County High School graduate and a former employee of Camp Wood YMCA in Elmdale. Cooper gained experience in dog sledding as a student of outdoor recreation and leadership and environmental technology at Western States College in Gunnison, Colo. He also worked winter camps in Menogyn, Colo. running sled dogs. Eventually Cooper contacted Kelly and Margaret Maxiner of Mad Stork Kennels in Big Lake, Alaska for an opportunity to participate in Iditarod.

Machen unleashed a furious rally from the center of the stretch to catch Dominus at the finish line for the win. The victory boosted Machen's graded earnings to $169730, placing him 22nd among Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) hopefuls.
