Consol's Gilbert presents matchup problem with his athleticism
A&M Consolidated junior Jimmie Gilbert embodies the versatility his coach craves. Gilbert is tall and strong enough to battle big men under the basket, yet athletic enough to defend smaller players on the perimeter.
"What I really appreciate about Jimmie is he can guard anybody anywhere on the floor," Consol coach Rick German said. "It's not very often you have a 6-foot-5 guy come out and guard somebody else's guards. Coaches try to get mismatches, but they have a little surprise when Jimmie steps outside.
"I tell our guys that I don't want position players. I want basketball players. Jimmie is a basketball player."
That is high praise considering Gilbert sees himself, at least in the future, as a football player.
At a time when many of the best athletes in Class 5A specialize in one sport, Gilbert is flourishing in two. The junior is one of the top players for 20th-ranked Consol (30-4), which will face Dallas Jesuit (26-6) in the area playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at Waco Midway.
