Tasmanian bumper apple harvest caught up in price war
Tasmania is in for a bumper crop of apples this year. Good news you might think, but actually there are concerns that there will be little benefit if the value of the crop suffers too much in supermarket price wars.
Mark Duggan, at Cradoc, yesterday picked Gravensteins - one of 14 varieties he grows.
"We produce Gravensteins for the local market. We grow mostly Jonagold and red delicious, which are sold in NSW and Victoria," he said.
"The Cox's orange pippin should be the first week in March and they're looking very good this year."
"This season, volume wise there's a lot of fruit, which is a bit scary as that will bring the price down. With Coles and Woolies in an expected supermarket price war it's going to affect us hugely," Mr Duggan said.
