EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- He's an advocate for orphans, known around the world. Jim Daly, president of Focus On The Family, is heard by millions each week on his radio program.  

He recently made a stop in East Texas, sharing his personal story behind his passion for helping children. 

"We can't control today," Daly said. "We can't control our future."

Speaking at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Daly talked about his childhood.

"I had the normal dysfunctional family," he said.

Living in California, Daly's parents divorced. His dad moved away while his mom remarried. Jim was 8 years old at the time with four siblings.

"This is Bixby Elementary in Long Beach, California," he said. "This brings back lots of memories both good and bad."

Things went from bad to worse when his mother became ill. Six weeks later she died. His brother told him the news.
