Spice up Valentine's Day with unique gifts
But while candy and chocolate remain among the most popular Valentine items, consumers don't have to buy the same old box of chocolates this year for the loved one who's expecting something edible and delicious. Local stores and eateries have provided some suggestions for memorable treats and gifts that go outside the chocolate box.
TemptationsLinda Nicholson, retail manager for Temptations Everyday Gourmet (locations at Hanover Center , 3501 Oleander Drive, and Porter's Neck Center, 8207 Market St.), recommended the following Valentine possibilities: a cheese and wine basket, Goodness Gracie cookies or nuts, flavored peanuts and a "Slate Plate" or "Chill It Bag."
"A lot of it is stuff that you wouldn't necessarily splurge on in this economy and buy for yourself," Nicholson said.
Goodness Gracie, a local company, makes a variety of cookies and snacks, including Heavenly Toffee, Awesome Oatmeal cookies and Gone Nuts! Cocktail Snack Mix.
A Slate Plate, made of North Carolina black slate, is a versatile and decorative piece of dining equipment that can be used as a trivet, appetizer plate, serving tray, cheese board and more. Different sizes range from $11 to $20.
