'Power of prayer' keeps Fox, 99, in top shape
Fox celebrates her 100th birthday March 4.
Fox has seen a lot of changes in the world. Her world, however, has always been centered on faith and prayer.
“I believe in faith and the power of prayer,” Fox said. “The power of prayer is the greatest thing there is.”
Fox was born March 4, 1912, on a farm south of Elwood, the fifth of six children born to Fred and Rose Harm.
“I’ve just seen so many things from horse-and-buggy days,” said Fox. She remembers the two-seated carriage her father owned and used to get to church. She remembers the first car he bought. It had side curtains to keep out the rain and snow.
She recalls other firsts, such as the arrival of electricity in the Elwood area and the completion of the Tri-County project.
She also remembers when products cost a lot less — coffee was 15 cents a pound and gas was 19 or 20 cents a gallon.
“It’s overwhelming to see what they’re doing now,” she said of today’s prices. “To me, I keep saying it can’t go on. It can’t continue to go up — but it does.”
