NATS: Happy “Racing” Presidents' Day (with Photos)
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and measure between 5’7” and 6’6” in height. The height requirement is simply a matter of physics. “We once had a girl that was five feet tall and about 90 pounds audition and she literally fell over.” said a member of the entertainment staff. “That is why we have the height restrictions.” The costume heads weighs 45 pounds and applicants have to wear costumes for several hours and run from center field to home dugout (200 yards) in 40 seconds.
During the live auditions, candidates were allowed to select which costume they wanted to wear, except for Teddy, of course, since he was on vacation. The applicants first ran a solo 40-yard dash, followed by two Presidents Races from center field to home dugout and back (total of 400 yards). After catching their breath for a few seconds, the candidates had to perform a freestyle dance and then hit a victory pose.
