Holland Calvary boys basketball denied outright Alliance League title
One bad quarter spoiled Holland Calvary’s bid for an outright Alliance League championship.
The Crusaders led West Michigan Lutheran by four points at halftime on Saturday night at Davenport University, but the host Mustangs outscored their guests 23-9 in the third quarter on their way to an 82-73 win.
That dropped Holland Calvary to 11-2 in the Alliance League and into a virtual tie with Lutheran (12-2). Calvary is 14-4 overall.
“We scored 23, 20 and 21 points (in the first, second and fourth quarters) and nine in the third quarter and you can’t do that,” Calvary coach Lanny DeWitt said. “We had a little bit of a lead (43-39 at halftime) and we switched into a zone and for some reason we stopped moving and we let them take us out of our game.”
While Calvary was not playing its game, three players were posting big numbers for Lutheran. Guards Josh Spates and Devin Collier and beefy forward Jay Marshall combined for 17 of the Mustangs’ third-quarter points.
