Investigators looking for clues into wreck that killed 2
N.C. Highway Patrol troopers combed through the intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard and Park Street in Belmont Monday morning in an attempt to reconstruct a crash that took the lives of two beloved Belmont residents.
The department’s reconstruction unit measured tire impressions and mapped the scene to determine the details of the incident that claimed the lives of Kevin Loftin, 56, and Donna Deitz, 60. A South Carolina man sits in Gaston County Jail on two murder charges.
Multiple intersections were closed for more than two hours while troopers worked. The five-person reconstruction unit covers the western part of North Carolina when a fatal crash is believed to include drugs or alcohol or other felonies, said Trooper Dan Souther.
Aerial photographs were taken and a diagram of the wreck should indicate how fast Lester Saunders Norman Jr. was traveling when he plowed his Acura into the car that Loftin was driving home from an Ash Wednesday service in Charlotte Wednesday evening.
