Orchid festivals ready to bloom in South Florida
Orchids have popped up everywhere the past few years. Farmers markets are awash in pink and yellow flowers, living rooms are decorated with big white ones and even Home Depot carries a selection. But it seems that no one knows how to care for the delicate plants.
This Friday through Sunday, the 10th Annual International Orchid Festival will focus on how anyone can care for orchids at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden.
“It’s really trying to make orchids a lot more accessible to our members and homeowners throughout South Florida,” Fairchild Director Carl Lewis said.
The plants, while once expensive and just for collectors, have become more popular.
“Orchids are much more widely available than they have been at any other time,” Lewis said.
Many of the talks this weekend will focus on how to care for orchids in South Florida.
“Orchids have a somewhat undeserved reputation for being difficult to grow here,” he said.
